What to look for when shopping for a flavored lubricant, according to sex experts.

It’s no secret that using lubricant is a great way to make sex more enjoyable. Many people use lube to reduce friction during sexual activities, including penetrative and oral sex. It’s especially helpful for those dealing with vaginal dryness that’s often associated with menopause and breastfeeding, explains Christine Greves, M.D. a board-certified ob/gyn and fellow of the American Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology. However, people can benefit from adding lube to the bedroom no matter their age, gender, or sexual identity—and the best flavored lubes are a great place to start.

Some use flavored lubricants that offer the slippery sensation of typical lube with the bonus of a tasty flavor to help make certain activities, namely oral sex, more enjoyable and exciting for all parties. “With flavored lube, you can be less self-conscious when moving between oral and penetrative sex,” says Rachel Needle, a Florida-based licensed psychologist, certified sex therapist, and the co-director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. “And you can have fun with the flavors,” she adds. “Anything that involves and heightens our senses, can increase sexual arousal.”

Most flavored lubes are water-based, making them easier to clean up than real food like chocolate and whipped cream. However, the ingredients that give them their sweet taste—often sugar, glycerin, and sugar alternatives like Stevia—come with a few caveats, Dr. Greves points out. “The stuff that helps with the flavor may result in affecting the pH balance of the vagina, the overall flora, and could increase your risk for a yeast infection.”

While the certified sex therapists we talked to encourage people to experiment with flavored lubes from well-known brands if they want to, they note that these products do come with a risk of yeast infection. To limit this risk, you can avoid applying flavored lube to the vagina and save it for performing oral sex on a man, nipple play, and body massages. “[Flavored lube] is best used externally,” says Stephanie Hack, M.D., an ob-gyn and founder of Lady Parts Doctor.

Meet the experts: Rachel Needle, a Florida-based licensed psychologist, certified sex therapist, and the co-director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes; Christine Greves, M.D., a board-certified ob/gyn and fellow of the American Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Aliyah Moore, Ph.D., a certified sex therapist; Stephanie Hack, M.D., an ob-gyn and the founder of Lady Parts Doctor.

No matter what you have planned, you’ll want to avoid lubes with ingredients you’re allergic to or anything that includes preservatives, parabens, or fragrances, which are potentially irritating, says Needle. “Know your body and try the lube out prior to engaging in sexual activity with a partner.”

Ahead, learn more about the best flavored lubricants available. They come in all kinds of flavors, including fruity strawberry, sweet sea salt and caramel, and even beverage-inspired Prosecco.

Sliquid makes water-based lubricants in a variety of flavors, including pink lemonade, cherry vanilla, and green apple. This product comes recommended by Aliyah Moore, Ph.D., a certified sex therapist. She likes that it’s 100% vegan and free of glycerin and parabens. The water-based formula makes the lube unlikely to stain your sheets and safe to use with condoms and sex toys made from latex, rubber, and plastic. Lightly scented, the formula contains a small amount of aspartame (an artificial sweetener) to give it a slight taste that reviewers seem to love.

The product has hundreds of five-star ratings on Amazon. “I’m always one for something that tastes good, and when it comes to giving head, it makes the task a lot easier and tastier,” wrote one shopper.

This strawberry-flavored lube is a popular pick on Amazon. It’s a water-based liquid lubricant designed to have a long-lasting taste and smell of strawberries. The vegan formula is safe to use with condoms and shouldn’t leave behind a mess when you’re finished.

Thousands of Amazon shoppers give this flavored personal lubricant a five-star rating, and many comment on its enjoyable flavor and slippery texture. “I was looking for an affordable flavored lube for oral fun. Found this and the great reviews on it so I ordered. This was exactly the type I wanted on all counts!” wrote one customer. “The flavor is really tasty. The texture is perfect.”

For elevated flavors, turn to Lube Life’s line of flavored lubricants. All are water-based and safe to use with most toys and condoms made of rubber latex, polyisoprene, and polyurethane. They come in tasty flavors, like prosecco, birthday cake, and mai tai with help from sucralose (aka Splenda).

With more than 31,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, the Prosecco flavored lubricant is clearly a favorite among many shoppers. “This lube is literally delicious,” wrote a reviewer. “I have zero problem with the natural skin taste but bought this lube as just a fun addition. It’s very smooth and slippery and tastes great with no weird aftertaste.”

Lovehoney’s bubblegum flavored lubricant is water-based and comes in a squeezable bottle for easy application. According to reviewers, the taste and scent of this lube is spot on. Others commend its consistency, which may feel thicker and more slippery than other water-based lubes.

“I like using flavored lube when I give my husband blow jobs to slightly mask his natural scent and flavors and to give myself a little treat, and this lube is way better than what I was expecting,” wrote a reviewer. “This lube also gives a good amount of slip and slide without drying up on me.”

This piña colada-flavored lube is made with 95% food grade organic aloe vera and vitamin E. The water-based, vegan formula meets National Science Foundation organic standards and is free of glycerin and parabens.

“Definitely recommend this lube if you're a fanatic for oral, though the flavor might weird you out with how REAL it tastes,” said an Amazon reviewer.

For a decadent-tasting lubricant with a silky texture, turn to System Jo H20’s chocolate flavored lubricant. Ideal for oral sex and safe to use with condoms and sex toys, the water-based lube is designed to leave skin feeling soft and washes off easily with water. Plus, it’s licensed by the Food and Drug Administration.

Glissant was co-founded by Karyn Eilber, M.D., a board certified urologist, giving many reviewers peace of mind when it comes to enjoying the brand’s lubricants. One customer-favorite is the sea salt and caramel lube that comes in a discreet glass vial that could easily be mistaken for lipstick or perfume. Despite its sleek packaging (which is refillable), the product is, in fact, a water-based lubricant you can spray on your hands and partner.

“This is the only lube I use, and it truly is luxurious,” said a shopper. “I love how beautiful and discreet the bottle is, and I feel so good using it knowing the ingredients are clean and are such high quality.”

Hit on all the senses with this subtly flavored lube from Playground that has a sexy scent reviewers seem to love. The water-based lubricant smells and tastes of musk and warm woods. Plus, it includes adaptogens ashwagandha, black cohosh, and horny goat weed, which some studies suggest increase blood flow and increase libido. Plus, it’s packed with soothing ingredients, including vitamin E and hyaluronic acid and is safe to use with latex and polyisoprene condoms.

“This scent/flavor is great,” wrote one shopper. “It’s a very subtle, woody, slightly sweet blend. The lube is the best I’ve ever used! It feels so so natural, and it keeps things slippery without having to reapply.”

This strawberry flavored lubricant tastes about as close to the real thing as it gets, according to reviewers. The best-seller is a water-based lube that’s safe to use with condoms and sex toys. It gets its flavor from glycerin, propylene glycol, fruit extracts, aloe, and sodium saccharin (an artificial sweetener).

“[I] was really pleasantly surprised,” said a reviewer. “I bought it because it was healthier ingredients, but I was expecting it to taste so ‘fresh.’” Another noted that it tastes like “real strawberries.”

Xesso’s lubricant has more than 3,000 five-star ratings, and reviewers say the product tastes great.

✔️ Look at the ingredients. “If you’re prone to yeast infections, it’s best to choose flavored lubes that are glycerin-free,” says Moore. Glycerin is a type of sugar alcohol that’s commonly found in flavored lubricants to give them a sweet taste. “While it’s generally not harmful to humans, it can promote yeast growth and increase the risk of developing a yeast infection.” It may also dry or irritate cells in the vagina and rectum, adds Dr. Hack.

Needle also recommends avoiding lubes that contain ingredients you may be allergic to and those with preservatives. “Some fragrances can be irritating for some, especially those who have sensitive skin,” she adds.

Finally, steer clear of parabens and benzoic acid if possible. “They can cause irritation and sensitization for some,” says Dr. Hack.

✔️ Know what flavors you enjoy. The point of using a flavored lubricant is to make engaging in a sexual experience even more enjoyable, so picking a flavor you like is a no brainer. “It is important to check the label for ingredients and to ensure that the flavor is not overpowering or chemical-like,” says Moore.

✔️ Consider how you plan to use the product. Dr. Greves doesn’t recommend using flavored lubricants for vaginal intercourse due to the risk of yeast infection caused by some common ingredients, including glycerin and other sweeteners. However, people may use flavored lube for other sexual activities, such as oral sex and toy play. “If you plan to use flavored lubes with your favorite sex toys or condoms, be sure to check the packaging for compatibility and spot test them as needed,” says Moore.

“People might use flavored lube because it tastes good and can increase self-confidence,” says Needle. “Although, remember that everyone tastes and smells different.” Flavored lube may also simply be a fun addition to the bedroom for some. “Anything that involves and heightens our senses, can increase sexual arousal,” Needle adds.

As long as you are not allergic to any ingredients and use it for its intended purpose, flavored lube is safe to taste. Just be sure to thoroughly read product labels before using a new product. You might even consider testing a small amount first. If you’re concerned about potential allergic reactions or irritants, consult your medical provider for individual advice.

Lastly, keep in mind that there’s nothing wrong with the way genitals smell naturally. “Flavored lubes can also create unrealistic expectations or reinforce stereotypes about the way genitals are supposed to smell and taste,” says Dr. Hack.

Flavored lube offers the same lubricating benefits of traditional lube with added scents and flavors. In this way, “flavored lube can enhance the sensory experience of sex,” explains Needle.

However, be aware that some flavored lubricants may include irritating ingredients. Specifically, lube made with sugar and sugar derivatives can increase your chances of getting an infection, such as a yeast infection, especially after vaginal intercourse. Others contain parabens and fragrances that could cause irritation. That’s why you might be better off using flavored lube for external activities like massages and nipple play and oral sex not involving the vagina.
